Internet access has been restored at a Kew Gardens Hills post office causing major headaches for local customers, days after the Eagle reported on the weeks-long issue.

Several area residents complained that the internet outage, which began in mid-August, had prevented them from mailing packages, picking up stamps or purchasing money orders. The lack of internet also fueled conspiracy theories on Facebook, with some people alleging the issues represented efforts to disrupt mail-in voting. Others said the outage was designed to make President Donald Trump look bad.

In actuality, AT&T had simply failed to restore the service.

U.S. Rep. Grace Meng announced the end of the outage Friday.

“This lack of internet service was a huge inconvenience for constituents who depend on the services provided by the Kew Gardens Hills Post Office,” Meng said. “I’m pleased that this facility is back online, and that it can again serve the needs of customers.”

“As we fight against the current attacks on the Postal Service, we must make sure that post offices in our communities have the resources they need to serve the public,” she added.

The Kew Gardens Hills Post Office is located at 75-23 Main Street in Kew Gardens Hills. Customers can once again use credit cards to make transactions and spare themselves trips to more distant branches.
