The application deadline is approaching for a free design and development program that helps high school artists bolster their portfolios and prepare for the next steps in their careers.

The Queens Council on the Arts’ High School to Art School initiative will take place remotely from Oct. 17 to Feb. 13. The deadline to apply for the program is Sept. 30.

Students looking to pursue a degree in the arts will receive guidance through the application process, from deciding on a school to applying for scholarships. QCA staff also help participants who don’t plan on attending college decide which jobs may best fit their goals.

For many students the program teaches skills that go beyond the classroom setting and establishes a framework for real-world growth.

“HS2AS taught me to see, to create, and to think critically,” said testimony from HS2AS ‘19 participant Katherine Hui,  who is pursuing a Bachelor of Architecture from Rice University and focused on the impact of the built environment on the public.

“I am thankful that I had instructors who not only facilitated an enriching learning experience that pushed my artmaking but also provided new ways of seeing that continue to influence my design process,” she added.
