City Councilmember I. Daneek Miller hosted the annual Family Fun Day BBQ and Back-To-School Giveaway in Queens Village over the weekend.

The annual event held at Wayanda Park, featured free summer meals, music and family activities.

Students who attended were gifted free school supplies ahead of their return to in-person classes this fall.

Attendees also had the opportunity to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and to receive personal protective equipment, distributed by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

"Each year, we strive to provide an outlet for local families to utilize the local parks around the district, while also enjoying free food and entertainment for the whole family,” Miller said in a statement. “This weekend's event featured a back-to-school giveaway as our young scholars prepare to enter the classroom once again in a few short weeks, on-site vaccinations distributed through NYC Health + Hospitals Queens, and a host of non-profit and government resources for families to take home.”

The Parks Department, Neighborhood Housing Services of Jamaica, Destiny Bound, Deliverance Ministry, the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development, the Department of Sanitation, and the health department all served as co-sponsors of the event.

The third and final Family Day is scheduled for Sept. 18, at Detective Keith Williams Park from noon until 4 p.m.
