U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders has appointed Jessica Ramos, a state senator from Queens, to a position on the Democratic National Convention Rules Committee, ensuring progressive perspectives are heard ahead of next month’s event.

Sanders also appointed New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams.

Before each convention, the committee produces a report on the rules of the Democratic Party and sets the convention agenda. The committee also recommends people to serve as permanent convention officers.

Ramos called the appointment “an honor and great responsibility.”

“The task at hand is to ensure a democratic electoral process and a successful Democratic Convention that will build the coalition we need to elect Joe Biden as the next President of the United States,” she said.

“The American people, and certainly my Queens neighbors, deserve a government that is responsive to their needs and we will still have to push forward with our people-powered agenda.”

In 2016, Sanders appointed U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, environmentalist Bill McKibben, Native American activist Deborah Parker, author and justice advocate Cornel West and Arab American Institute President James Zogby to the committee.

The 2020 DNC will take place Aug. 17 to Aug. 20.
