One hundred and two years ago women were granted the right to vote in the United States, the Treaty of Versailles was signed and Queens resident Dr. Sheldon Schwartz was born.
Schwartz celebrated his 102nd birthday this week by receiving an Assembly Proclamation from Assembly member David Weprin.
“Sheldon Schwartz devoted his life to serving others by working as a doctor in Queens,” Weprin said. “Perhaps, a commitment to making things better for people in need is the secret to longevity. We would all do well by following Dr. Schwartz's example.”
Born on July 21, 1919, Schwartz was educated at Richmond Hill High School. He attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and earned his medical degree at NYU’s School of Medicine.
Staying in New York, Schwartz practiced as the chief of the Clinic of Arthritis and Rheumatism at Bellevue Hospital and was the first chairman of Rheumatology at Long Island Jewish Hospital.
He went on to help build and serve as the chief of medicine at Hillcrest General Hospital.
Schwartz also served as a member of the JASA Holliswood Senior Center and the Young Israel of Holliswood.
