The Eagle’s Victoria Merlino to participate in neighborhood reporting panel
/By Jonathan Sperling
Eagle staff reporter Victoria Merlino was invited to appear at a citywide panel on Dec. 11 as part of a discussion on the importance of neighborhood reporting.
“Neighborhood Reporting in New York City Today,” hosted by Tribeca-based arts nonprofit Apexart, seeks to uncover how local publications, such as the Eagle, have adapted to shifts in news media. The forum will also explore the challenges and triumphs of local reporting.
Merlino joined the Eagle team in July 2018 and quickly found a foothold as a multi-talented writer and reporter covering politics, housing, business, labor and immigration. Her favorite coverage area, however, is Queens’ arts scene, which she has covered extensively, from Laurelton or Long Island City.
The panel will be moderated by Sarah Bartlett, dean of the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York. Merlino’s fellow panelists include Carl Glassman, editor and co-founder of The Tribeca Trib; Michael Hinman, editor of The Riverdale Press; April Koral, the publisher and co-founder of The Tribeca Trib; Clifford Michel, a reporter for THE CITY; and Brett Yates, the assistant editor of the Red Hook Star-Revue.
The event is hosted at Apexart’s headquarters, located at 291 Church St. in Manhattan. The discussion begins at 6 p.m. Entry is free, but attendees should RSVP by visiting apexart.org/neighborhood.php.
