Members of the St. Albans community gathered at a street renaming ceremony on July 21 to honor revered community board member and civil leader Cardinal Sandiford.
Councilmember I. Daneek Miller led the proposal to co-name the street corner at Anderson Road and Sidway Place in memoriam to Sandiford, who died in 2013, three years after surviving a life threatening eye infection.
Sandiford, an Army veteran best known for his years serving on Community Board 12, spent nine years serving as chairperson of the land use committee. He also served as president of the Octagon Neighborhood Association and a board member of the Robert Couche Senior Citizen Center.
Councilmember Adrienne Adams formerly served alongside Sandiford on CB 12 and remembered him fondly.
“Queens is a better place thanks to the hard work and devotion of Cardinal Sandiford,”Adams said. “He was a pillar of the community and the significant contributions that he made to Queens will not be forgotten.
