The Queens Public Library has shut its doors in an attempt to stem the spread of the coronavirus outbreak.

QPL announced that its branches would be closed from March 16 until further notice to protect the health and safety of its customers and its staff. QPL follows the lead of the Brooklyn Public Library and the New York Public Library, which have also closed in response to the virus.

The library system plans to expand its digital offerings for the public to continue to use during the shutdown, according to a statement on its website.

“We know how much our communities depend on our libraries and thank you for your understanding during this challenging time,” QPL President Dennis Walcott said.

The closure comes as the state moves to limit large crowds and promote social distancing among city residents, including shutting down all theaters and entertainment venues, and limiting restaurants to serving take-out and delivery only.
