With Administrative Judge Jeremy Weinstein retiring effective Aug. 30, the process has begun to select a new administrative judge in the Queens Supreme Court, Civil Term.

Weinstein was the top judge at the Sutphin Boulevard courthouse for the past decade and his retirement will leave a void in leadership. The state Office of Court Administration has begun the process for selecting a new top judge. Chief Administrative Judge Lawrence Marks and Deputy Chief Administrative Judge for New York City Courts George Silver will conduct interviews with applicants and make the ultimate decision.

An OCA spokesperson said the agency expects to select a permanent replacement in the fall. Until then, Silver will serve as the acting Queens administrative judge.

The process entails fielding applications from sitting judges, including some who potentially preside outside Queens. In the past, the Office of Court Administration has sent letters to judges in Queens and elsewhere in the state to notify them of the opening, people familiar with the process told the Eagle.

OCA also talks with the outgoing administrative judge to gain their perspective.

The role requires a leader who manages multiple successful, intelligent people while fostering good relationships and solving specific courthouse problems.

State leaders have not yet selected the next person to fill that role.
