Special to the Eagle

After being a community activist in Queens for two decades, I decided to run for office because our current class of politicians has failed us.

Since I entered the race for Queens Borough President late last year, the world has changed, given the ongoing pandemic and the aftermath of the tragic death of George Floyd.  The challenges posed by these recent events reconfirms that this City needs new leadership and that I am the best choice for Queens Borough President.

George Floyd was murdered, and I supported the peaceful protests.  Now, in view of the recent looting and rising crime in New York City, the single most pressing issue facing Queens is public safety.

I am the only candidate in the race focusing on keeping all residents in Queens safe and standing up in support of our men and women in blue.  I will focus on protecting the lives and property of our residents and will not allow thieves, gangsters, and criminals to abuse our open, democratic society.

Although some reforms will no doubt be productive, the notion of defunding the NYPD is a nonstarter.  I will fight to increase the funding given to the NYPD and will collaborate with community leaders throughout Queens to promote trust and respect, and to ensure we can all live peacefully together.

In an abrupt about-face, Elizabeth Crowley, the candidate who has been endorsed by the leading police union in the City, the Police Benevolent Association, alleged at a recent debate that “institutional racism” “has plagued law enforcement in New York City for generations.”  Undermining those who keep us safe, which Elizabeth Crowley has now done, is unproductive.

Second, New York City faces a budget crisis in view of the ongoing pandemic. I am the only businessman in the race and the only candidate with a proven track record of success in managing budgets and successfully implementing large projects.

We must bring well-paying jobs to our City.  I will increase jobs by working with large corporations which seek to invest in us.  I will work to renegotiate better deals with Amazon and other corporations to bring jobs back to Queens.

I know how hard it is to raise a family in Queens.  I am a first-generation immigrant, and I came to Queens to start a family.  I know how hard it is to prosper in this City.

I have seen many small businesses succeed, but I have seen many others struggle.  Our schools have also failed many of our children, given that only 37% of our high school graduates are prepared for college.

Queens is the most diverse county in the entire country.  I have noticed that so many people in this great borough are left out by our establishment politicians.  I am now fighting for all communities to make sure their voices are heard.

Even before the coronavirus pandemic and the growing crisis in public safety, this City faced a variety of challenges.  Unfortunately, the political establishment has catered to special interests and failed to address the longstanding problems of homelessness, crumbling public transit, and the lack of affordable housing.

My opponents have been members of the political establishment for years and have failed to address these problems.

During these challenging times, we must not be complacent.  My work as a corporate controller and in finance, technology, and accounting makes me uniquely qualified to become the next Queens Borough President and lead the City through the crises it now faces.

Dao Yin is a candidate in the upcoming Democratic Primary for Queens Borough President.  Election Day is Tuesday, June 23.
