New York City’s top doctor has tested positive for COVID-19.

Health Commissioner Dr. Dave Chokshi announced Tuesday that he had the coronavirus and is experiencing mild symptoms. Chokshi has not yet received the vaccine and previously told the Eagle he was waiting until it was his turn under state vaccine eligibility guidlines.

In December, Chokshi administered the first dose to a medical worker at a city-run hospital.

His diagnosis, he said, proves that the virus remains a threat and demonstrates the need for continued precautions like social distancing and mask-wearing.

“In New York City and across the country, COVID continues to circulate in our communities, and all of us are potentially exposed to the virus,” he said in a statement. “A testament to this fact is that I recently got tested and received a positive diagnosis for COVID-19.”

Chokshi, a Queens resident who took over as Health Commissioner in August 2020, said New York City’s Test and Trace Corps is reaching out to people he has encountered in recent weeks.

He has visited a few vaccination distribution sites and even administered shots in Staten Island last weekend.

Mayor Bill de Blasio addressed Chokshi’s diagnosis during his Tuesday morning press briefing.

“There is always the possibility that COVID can reach us," de Blasio said.
