The social justice organization New York Communities for Change has endorsed Costa Constantinides for Queens borough president, bolstering the Astoria councilmember’s progressive bona fides ahead of the June 23 Democratic primary.
NYCC cited Constantinides’ legislative work as chair of the Council's Committee on Environmental Protection in announcing their endorsement. The organization worked with Constantinides to introduce and pass the Climate Mobilization Act and Green New Deal for New York City, which imposes efficiency standards on skyscrapers and other large buildings, said NYCC Executive Director Jonathan Westin.
"Costa has proven he will stand up to Big Real Estate to fight for affordability and climate justice,” Westin said.
The law forces all large building owners to retrofit their towers to make them more energy efficient and lower emissions by 10 percent compared to 2005 levels. The measure also mandates that new glass-walled buildings be energy efficient.
Early voting in the Democratic primary for Queens borough president begins June 13. All voters have the option of voting by mail if they submit their ballot application by June 16.
The five-candidate field includes Constantinides, Councilmember Elizabeth Crowley, retired NYPD Sergeant Anthony Miranda, Councilmember Donovan Richards and business consultant and community activist Dao Yin.
