Wednesday marked the great jazz musician Louis Armstrong’s 120th birthday.

Armstrong, who was born in New Orleans, lived in Corona for nearly three decades. Today, his home is a landmarked property and serves as a museum dedicated to the musician’s life.

Armstrong was born on Aug. 4, 1901. In his 20s, the musician nicknamed “Pops” began to make a name for himself through his trumpet playing. He went on to become one of the most influential jazz musicians of all time.

After playing across the country, he settled in Queens in 1943, where he lived and played until his death in 1971.

Armstrong was posthumously awarded with Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1972 and has had a dozen records entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

His Corona home was named a National Historic Landmark in 1977.

The museum, located at 34-56 107th St., features hundreds of recordings, writings, books and memorabilia owned by the musician, his family and collectors.

After being closed throughout the pandemic, the museum recently reopened its doors and is offering tours Thursday through Saturday.
