Social Distance: 0.1% of Queens voters visited early polling sites this weekend
/By David Brand
Queens voters have certainly practiced social distancing during the first early voting period of the COVID-19 era.
Just 0.1 percent of Queens voters — 1,742 of nearly 1.3 million registered voters — visited one of 18 polling sites during the first two days of early voting, according to Board of Elections data.
Citywide, 7,269 voters visited a polling place on Saturday and Sunday.
The low turnout may be the result of the state’s mail-in ballot effort. For the first time, all registered voters can cast an absentee ballot if they submit their ballot application by June 16. Voters who cast their ballot by mail can still vote in-person — only the in-person vote will count.
Early voting ends June 21 in the primary elections for Queens borough president, 19 Queens assembly positions, seven state Senate seats and seven House seats. Primary day is June 23.
