Three Far Rockaway schools now offer Kosher grab-and-go meals

By David Brand

Three Far Rockaway schools have begun offering daily kosher meals for students and families in the local Jewish community, Councilmember Donovan Richards said Monday.

The Department of Education provides daily to-go meals at 435 schools across the city, but few provide kosher options. The city expanded kosher service in Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island on April 23.

“By making diverse meals available at our public schools, we in essence knock down barriers to accessing nutritious diets which is a need in every community,” Richards said.

Any New Yorker, regardless of age, can pick up meals — including kosher options — at the participating public schools.

The Rockaway schools serving kosher meals are:

• P.S. 197, the Ocean School, at 825 Hicksville Rd.

• P.S. 253  at 1307 Central Ave.

• P.S. 215 at 535 Briar Pl.

Two other Queens schools also serve kosher to-go meals:

• P.S. 154 Queens – 75-02 162 St. in Kew Gardens Hills

• P.S. 164 – 138-01 77 Ave. in Kew Gardens Hills
