The nonprofit organization Commonpoint Queens has distributed more than 1 million pounds of food since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City, earning it a special honor from Acting Borough President Sharon Lee.

Lee designated Oct. 27 as “Commonpoint Queens Day” during a celebration honoring the organization’s efforts to reach neighbors in need.

To mark the milestone, Commonpoint asked students about the equivalent of one million pounds. Students’ answers ranged from “a whole train” to “a ginormous rainbow.”

For the thousands of Queens residents who received food through the organization’s distribution efforts, a million pounds meant being able to put food on the table.

“I am incredibly proud of this truly outstanding organization and the errands of mercy they’ve performed,” tweeted Councilmember Barry Grodenchik.

Commonpoint has worked with Lee’s office, elected officials, community groups and corporate partners to distribute food since March, when the COVID crisis exacerbated existing food insecurity in Queens.

Since then, lines at food pantries across the borough have continued to grow while funding has dwindled. Several mutual aid networks have formed to help residents access food.
