Citizens Union announced its preference for former Judge Gregory Lasak in the Queens district attorney Democratic primary race on Monday.

“Later this month, voters in Queens will have the opportunity to cast their ballot in a crucial election,” said Betsy Gotbaum, executive director of Citizens Union, in a statement. “We encourage all voters to take a long, hard look at all of the candidates in this race. Citizens Union is pleased to issue its preference for Gregory Lasak for Queens District Attorney.”

The Citizens Union, a nonpartisan government watchdog organization, called its review of the DA candidates “among the most extensive and methodical in the state,” with each candidate answering an extensive questionnaire about positions on key issues and being interviewed by a nonpartisan team of Citizens Union members. Hundreds of hours of additional research also go into the decision.

The Citizens Union evaluates candidates based on their commitment to reform and their ability to fulfill the roles of their office.

“Gregory Lasak’s impressive track record as a prosecutor and judge make him the best candidate to lead the Queens County District Attorney’s office. Judge Lasak has proposed bold ideas to make the office more transparent and fair,” Gotbaum added.

Voting for the primary is set for Tuesday, June 25.
