Former public defender Tiffany Cabán has filed a campaign committee with the state Board of Elections, a month after conceding defeat in the tight Democratic primary for Queens District Attorney.

Cabán lists herself as treasurer of the committee, which contains funds left over from her long drawn-out primary race, which ended in a 55-vote loss to Melinda Katz, the borough president. There is no specific office listed on the campaign committee filing, prompting speculation on social media and in political back channels about what office Cabán would seek.

Political insiders have speculated about Cabán running for office at the city, state and federal level. She could make a run for borough president if Katz wins the general election for DA.

She could run for Councilmember Costa Constantinides’ District 22 seat if he wins a DA special election, some observers muse. She could also challenge Aravella Simotas for the State Assembly or U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney in New York’s 12th Congressional District.

For her part, Cabán is keeping a low profile on the matter.

“Tiffany is taking a minute to rest after a long campaign,” her spokesperson told the Eagle. “She’s still contemplating how best to take on mass incarceration and dismantle systemic inequities in our society, and hasn’t made any decisions.”

A spokesperson for the New York City Democratic Socialists of America, of which Cabán is a member, also declined to comment.
