Broken water main floods swath of Oakland Gardens

A broken water main has flooded a swath of Oakland Gardens near 67th Avenue and 210th Street, submerging yards and stranding cars in murky, brown liquid.
Councilmember Barry Grodenchik said a 12-inch pipe burst in the middle of the intersection and began spewing water. No one was injured, he said.
Photos show the roadway cracked and crumbling where the pipe ruptured.
He said the Department of Environmental Protection, Department of Transportation and Con Edison were at the scene near Cunningham Park.
“They’re pumping out what has to be pumped out,” Grodenchik said. “There is a lot of water. It looks like a little lake.”
He said a truck used to pump the water was located on the other side of the flooded street.
“I can’t even get to it. I’d have to swim,” he said. “This roadway is going to be closed for some time to come.
An ABC News helicopter captured the scene in the flooded residential neighborhood.

A spokesperson for the DEP said emergency crews were assessing the situation and will make the necessary repairs.
“Water has been shut down and workers are currently clearing catch basins to help alleviate the street flooding,” the spokesperson said.
Neighborhoods throughout Eastern Queens are routinely beset by flooding. “The infrastructure in this city is aging,” Grodenchik said.
