The Southern Queens Park Association’s 18th Annual “Colors in Black” art exhibition is set to return to Roy Wilkins Park in March.

The exhibition will showcase work by various artists of color, such as Larry Green, inspired by his native Chicago and water towers; Carlton Murell, a celebrated artist from Barbados who has spent the last decade teaching art classes at the Queens Community House, and Nate Ladson, whose work often explores culture and injustice. Students from across Queens will also display their own art at the event.

Student engagement is a vital part of the exhibition, and the annual event is as much for kids as it is for adults, the organizers said.

Opening night festivities include the announcement of a student art contest winner. School groups will be able to tour the exhibit and participate in workshops led by local artists.

“It's a great way to honor our community and talent which resides right in our backyard” said Shenna Vaughn, artist and SQPA committee member.

The opening reception is from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 1. The exhibit is open through  the rest of the week, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, and until 3 p.m. Saturday.
