Queens-raised President Donald Trump said on social media Monday that Zohran Mamdani will have “problems” if he is ultimately elected to City Hall in November.

Trump, who has threatened New York City and Mamdani, the front-runner, several times in the last few weeks, made it clear on Monday that he will not take a Mamdani victory in stride, and would withhold federal dollars from the city.

“Mamdani, who is running for Mayor, will prove to be one of the best things to ever happen to our great Republican Party,” Trump wrote. “He is going to have problems with Washington like no Mayor in the history of our once great City. Remember, he needs the money from me, as President, in order to fulfill all of his FAKE Communist promises.”

“He won't be getting any of it, so what's the point of voting for him? This ideology has failed, always, for thousands of years,” he added. “It will fail again, and that's guaranteed!”

In the post, Trump called Mamdani a “self-proclaimed Communist,” something Mamdani is not, and has never claimed to be.

Speaking to reporters on Monday morning in Manhattan, Mamdani said that the president is “going through the stages of grief.”

The post on Trump’s conservative social media site TruthSocial came less than a day after Mayor Eric Adams bowed out of the mayoral race, which some have speculated was influenced by the Queens-born president.

Adams' surprise departure from the mayor’s race came about a month after rumours – which he denied – circulated that he was looking for a job within the Trump administration.

During his appearance in Manhattan on Monday, Mamdani said that “nothing has changed,” following Adams’ announcement, which leaves him in a three-way race against former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.

“[It] doesn’t matter who is on the ballot, but what is on the ballot,” Mamdani said.
