Several neighborhoods in Queens saw fewer than five cases of COVID-19 last week as positive case numbers continue to precipitously decline across the city.
The drop in cases comes as New York City continues its push toward a full reopening of business and cultural institutions.
Among the neighborhoods with five or fewer cases, one didn’t see a single case of COVID-19 last week, according to data from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Despite administering 531 tests in Breezy Point’s 11697 zip code, zero cases of COVID-19 were detected.
Long Island City’s 11101 zip code saw 5 cases while another zip code in the neighborhood, 11109, registered 2 cases, the data shows. In both Douglaston and Cambria Heights, 4 cases were detected. The neighborhoods had a positive testing rate of 0.97 and 0.7 percent respectively.
Bayside’s 11361 zip code detected 3 cases of COVID-19 last week for a positive testing rate of 0.52 percent. In South Jamaica, 2 cases were reported in the 11436 zip code.
Despite the low case count in a handful of Queens neighborhoods, several zip codes in the borough registered positive case percentages that hovered around the citywide average of 3.55 percent last week.
The 11370 zip code, which includes Rikers Island and a section of East Elmhurst, saw 25 cases for a positivity rate around 3.2 percent. Flushing’s 11355 zip code registered 40 cases and Far Rockaway’s 11691 zip code saw 48 cases with a 2.85 and 2.66 positive test rate respectively.
All of the city’s COVID-19 indicators, including the positive testing rate, case count, hospitalization rate and death count, saw declines last week.
Around half of the city’s residents have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, city data shows.
