Long Island City’s Silvercup Studios opened its doors as part of the city’s first Career Discovery Week — a citywide effort to connect highschoolers to the professional world.

A group of tenth graders from Academy for Careers in Television and Film toured the set of the Fox TV show “Prodigal Son” before getting the chance to learn from the show’s designers, producers and director. The crew shared their background and the experiences that led to their careers in the film industry.

Students also had the opportunity to ask department heads specific questions about the industry.

Executive Producer Adam Kane spoke to the students about seizing every opportunity on the way to achieving their goals.

“[Early in my career] I was shooting news broadcasts, weddings, bar mitzvahs, and even depositions to get the experience I needed before moving over to television,” Kane said.

The program was part of a collaboration between the Partnership for New York City and The New York City Department of Education, which and matches schools with businesses in line with their curriculum. Priority was given to schools in under-resourced communities.
