How Will District 19 Spend $1 Million?
/By Jonathan Sperling
A new gymnasium or a portable STEM lab? Why not both?
Northeast Queens residents now have the chance to decide how they want to spend around $1 million to improve their area as part of Council District 19’s Participatory Budgeting Ballot, which opens on Saturday.
Residents who are age 14 or older and live in District 19 — that’s Auburndale, Bayside, Bay Terrace, Beechhurst, College Point, Douglaston, Little Neck, Malba, North Flushing and Whitestone — may vote for up to five projects from a range of 20 different projects.
“Participatory budgeting is grassroots democracy at its best and a great way to get the pulse of the community’s interests and budget priorities,” said Councilmember Paul Vallone in a statement. “Last year’s incredibly successful cycle, which garnered the most votes of any Council District in Queens, shows the power and importance of this community-led process. As we prepare to kick off our fifth Participatory Budgeting voting cycle, I look forward to the results and announcing this year’s winners!”
Last year, nearly $1.8 million in funding was allocated to projects that the Northeast Queens community proposed, developed and voted on. Typically, more than 5,000 votes are cast.
The following projects will appear on this year’s ballot:
