U.S. Rep. Gregory Meeks was named the new chairperson of the Queens County Democratic Party after district leaders gathered for a vote Monday morning.

“Humbled, Honored, & Fired-up to be elected @Queens_Dems Chair,” Meeks tweeted after the vote. “Ready to move our Borough, City, & State forward.”

Meeks replaces former U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley as party chair. Crowley served in the leadership role since 2006 but stepped down after accepting a job with a D.C. lobbying firm.

Meeks, 65, has represented the 5th Congressional District in Southeast Queens since 1998. He previously served in the state Assembly from 1993 to 1998.
