Three veterans of the Queens political scene have joined Borough President Melinda Katz’s team as senior members of the leadership team.
Shurn Anderson became the new director of Economic Development, Brent Weitzberg takes over as director of Health and Human Services and Seniors and Anayeli Gomez-Brittain will serve as Katz’s policy advisor.
“Shurn, Brent and Anayeli have long demonstrated themselves to be exceedingly capable in serving the people of Queens with integrity, experience and professionalism,” Katz said. “Their commitment to the empowerment of the growing families and communities across Queens is second to none. I have full confidence in their abilities to execute my vision and priorities for this great borough of 2.35 million people.”
Anderson has worked in the borough president’s office for 17 years, most recently as deputy director of economic development. Anderson now oversees various economic development initiatives and priorities, including Sunnyside Yard, the Willets Point Redevelopment, the Jamaica NOW Action Plan, the Governor’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative and the Western Queens Tech Zone Strategic Plan, according to Borough Hall.
Weitzberg, an attorney and the former chief of staff for Assemblymember Andrew Hevesi from 2015-2018, will oversee services related to health, mental health, senior citizens, children, homelessness, disabilities, food insecurity and animal welfare, according to Borough Hall
Gomez-Brittain most recently served in the Public Affairs Bureau for City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer from 2016 until earlier this year. She will manage outreach on various issues, including labor, prevailing wage, immigration, human trafficking, domestic violence and crime, according to Borough Hall.
