CUNY Law Professor Chaumtoli Huq founded the organization Law@theMargins to amplify the voices of local communities and to uplift people whose perspectives often go overlooked. To help accomplish that mission, Law@theMargins and their affiliate, the Community Based Newsroom (CBNR), will host a webinar featuring local newspapers from across the country, including the Queens Daily Eagle.

“Stories have the power to shape lives,” Law@theMargins said in a statement. “What happens when that power is held by those with a community focus?”

Confirmed speakers include Huq, CNBR Executive Editora Eric Ortiz, KCETLink digital producer Carla Pineda, critical race scholar Shannon Luders-Manuel, journalist Michael Nigro, LA Progressive editor Dick Price, immigrants rights activist Maru Mora Villalpando and Eagle managing editor David Brand.

Villalpando, Nigro, Luders-Manuel and Pineda are all contributors to the CBNR’s “We the Immigrants” series.

“New voices lead to new perspectives on issues. New perspectives on issues lead to changes in society,” Huq told the Eagle in August. “That’s the power of narrative. You can tell a story that can impact the ability to obtain rights and justice.”
