Manhole fires caused sporadic power outages throughout Queens Sunday, including an extensive outage in Hollis where firefighters had to extinguish an underground transformer explosion spitting flames onto Francis Lewis Boulevard at 112th Avenue.

The fire was caused heavy rains that poured water and road salts into feeder cables and transformer vaults and corroded wiring, FDNY officials said.

Several hundred homes lost power and street lamps were out for several hours, firefighters said.

Firefighters closed a stretch of Francis Lewis Boulevard to manage the fire with chemical agents.
